DSI Takes Over Hosting: Run the World – AI Explorers Summer Camp
The Run the World: AI Explorers Summer Camp is an immersive experience where high school students explore the power of AI, machine learning, and data science. Now hosted by the Data Science Initiative (DSI), this camp continues a strong tradition of bringing students to campus to engage with cutting-edge technology and real-world data.
Originally launched in 2018 as the <RUN>: \ THE\ WORLD Machine Learning Summer Day Camp, this program was sponsored by the DSI, School of Statistics, and the School of Mathematics. Each summer, it brought together high school juniors and seniors from across the Twin Cities metro to learn about data science, statistics, and machine learning.
Now under the leadership of DSI, the camp maintains its hands-on, project-based approach. In just one week, campers dive into machine learning, working with real datasets from medicine, history, and ecology to uncover meaningful insights. With the freedom to choose their own project topics—whether it’s classifying Pokémon, identifying poisonous mushrooms, or predicting Minnesota snow days—campers gain valuable experience applying Python to analyze patterns, trends, and predictions.
No prior coding experience? No problem! Whether you're a beginner or already familiar with programming, by the end of the week, you'll be conducting data-driven investigations and gaining skills that will set you up for future success in AI and data science.
