School of Public Health: Equitable Data Science in Adolescent Development Summer Research Program

Website

The University of Minnesota Division of Biostatistics and the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain invite eligible undergraduate students to apply for the Equitable Data Science in Adolescent Development Summer Research Program for Undergraduates. This 10-week program is a paid, full-time position designed to give undergraduate students hands-on training and research experience in data science, statistical modeling and machine learning, and scientific communication.

Students will receive mentorship and have opportunities for professional and academic development. Topics on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and their role in data science form the foundations of this program, emphasized early through DEI modules and discussions.

Through this program, students may encounter and address questions such as:

  1. How do we discover the sources of bias in data?
  2. How do we assess the fairness of statistical models?
  3. Is it possible to modify existing statistical models to make them more fair?
  4. How do we quantify and compare the performance of statistical models across population subgroups?
  5. Can we develop de novo statistical models that balance accuracy with equity?

School of Mathematics and Statistics: < RUN>: \ THE\ WORLD Machine Learning Summer Day Camp

Website

Experience the exciting and growing field of machine learning. Learn cool programming and math techniques to work on hands-on computer projects that make a difference in the world. By training computer models to identify shapes, trends, and preferences, you can: predict winners in a game, generate custom designs, diagnose dangerous diseases, make suggestions about purchases

Carlson School of Management: Analytics U

Website

Analytics U is a weeklong day camp that introduces middle and high school students to analytics.  This initiative aims to impact the lives of individuals as well as the analytics profession.  Analytics U partners with organizations and faculty to help create learning experiences for students to learn more about the field of analytics and how you can do this work.

ICIG, RCC, and UROC: Northside Summer Internship

Institutional Cyberinfrastructure Group (ICIG), Research Cyberinfrastructure Champions Group (RCC), and Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC)

The Northside Summer Internship Program offers a transformative approach to community engagement and youth empowerment. Along with the internship opportunity, our broader approach includes several initiatives that span communities and memberships. Collaborations with organizations such as Northside STEM and Target Tech have resulted in innovative educational tools such as an engaging card game that teaches the complexities of IT systems and a video game teaching about the seven layers of the Open Systems Initiative (OSI) framework.

College of Science and Engineering: Summer Computing Academy for female students

Website

The main goal of this program is to teach computer programming using python in an intense hands-on program to be held on the University of Minnesota campus.

The program will include lectures on fundamental programming concepts and on the python programming language together with extensive hands-on experience in a computer lab.

Instruction will be done by graduate students and professors. Participants will have ample time to work in a computer lab to develop programs for small robots, image processing, and other applications under close supervision of teaching assistants. In addition, there will be a variety of career planning and discovery activities. The afternoon of the last day we will invite parents and friends to see presentations of the projects the students have done during the program.

Food, Agriculture and U

This program aims to provide participants with an understanding of how modern science is used to understand the properties of the food we eat, and how we improve its qualities through breeding.

BCOE (Biostatistics Community Outreach and Engagement) projects

This program is a throughout-the-year program, so it works a bit differently than the preceding summer programs. The program shares knowledge of and passion for statistics! Some things they have done include (more examples can be seen on the ‘past projects’ tab in their website):

  • Curriculum development and teacher training
  • App development (as an educational tool)
  • Sharing information on statistics/biostatistics as careers
  • Statistical consulting, including framing questions as statistical questions, study/survey design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation
